A goalie is the player who stands in the goal and tries to stop the ball or puck going in. It is the everyday, slightly name for the same person a match report might call a goalkeeper. You hear it on the sidelines and in the dressing room — “Nice save, goalie!” — more than in careful writing. Though actually, the sport colours the word a little: in football (soccer) both goalie and goalkeeper are fine in speech; in ice hockey people often say goalie or instead. The job is the same picture everywhere: last person, small space, stop the shot. It can also be used loosely for anyone stuck defending a tight spot, but that stretch is playful, not the main use.
