1. 1

GNVQ stands for General National Vocational Qualification. For about fifteen years, some students in England and Wales took this instead of, or beside, the more and A-level path. It was a course plus exams in a practical field — business, information technology, engineering, health and social care, and so on — usually around the age of 16, with Foundation, Intermediate, and Advanced levels. The idea was to show you could do a kind of work, not only sit a paper about it. Schools and colleges stopped offering GNVQ in the 2000s; later practical courses took its place. If you meet the letters now, they almost always belong to that older British system. Students in Taiwan do not take GNVQ; you only need the name when you read about UK schools of that time.
