An NVQ is a British work qualification. The letters stand for National Vocational Qualification. You take one to show you can actually do a job — hairdressing, building, childcare, cooking, and so on — not just that you passed a school exam on paper. People usually take NVQs while they are already working, or in job training. They are from Britain; a student in Taiwan will not sit one unless they work or train there. Though actually, Britain has changed some of the official names over the years, and you will now also meet other labels, but NVQ is still the name people use in conversation, older job ads, and many workplaces. It is closer to a trade licence than to a university degree.
