GNP stands for Gross National Product. It is a huge number governments use: add up the money value of all the goods and services a country’s people produced, usually in one year. “Gross” here means “before you take anything off”, “national” means “for the whole country”, and “product” means “what was produced”. The figure includes work done by that country’s people even if they were living abroad, and it leaves out work done inside the country by . That is the quiet difference from GDP (Gross Domestic Product), which counts what was made inside the country’s borders, whoever made it. News and school books today usually quote GDP; GNP was the headline number for a long time, and you will still meet it in older reports and in exam questions. It is a formal economics term.
