A gnomic remark is short and sounds clever or wise, but you may have to sit with it before you know what the person meant. Think of an old saying packed into a few words, or a teacher who answers your question with one sharp line and a half-smile. Writers and critics use the word more than everyday speakers. If you call someone’s speech gnomic, you might mean it as a compliment (how sharp) or as a complaint (why won’t they just say it ?). It is a , slightly formal adjective, not a word for the shops.

組成From French gnomique, from Ancient Greek gnōmikós, from gnṓmē, “thought, judgement”, kin to the Greek verb for “know”. By the look of the English word it is gnome + -ic — and that gnome is the old name for a short wise saying, not the little garden statue with a pointed hat.
