A GMS is a piece of kit, more like a small computer than a hammer or a camera, running special software. What it is for is to build a picture of the natural ground in one area: the rocks, the layers under your feet, and the water that moves through those rocks. Surveyors, water engineers, and geologists use it when they need to ‘see’ underground without digging the whole place up — for example, where a well might work, or how water would flow if you built on a hillside. It does not take a holiday photo of trees and rivers. It makes a model, often in 3D, of what the land is like below the surface. You are unlikely to meet this word in a café; it belongs to technical and scientific work. Do not mix it with the better-known letter groups GMT, GMO, or GMC, which look similar on the page but mean completely different things.
