The gloaming is early evening, when day is turning into night and the light goes soft and grey. It is a beautiful, slightly old or song-like word for . You will meet it more in poems, songs, and Scottish or northern speech than in everyday city English, where people say or twilight. It feels calm — lamps starting to come on, the sky still holding a little light. It is not full night, and it is not late afternoon while the sun is still clearly up.

組成From Middle English gloming, from Old English glōmung, from Old English glōm ('twilight'). Related to glow. The modern vowel is unexpected: Old English glōmung would normally have become glooming. The OED's explanation is probably that the ō was shortened in the old compound ǣfen-glommung ('evening twilight'), and from that compound a new form glŏmung grew, which became Middle English glǭming and then today's gloaming.
