A glen is a deep, narrow valley, often with steep sides and a river or stream along the bottom. The word belongs especially to Scotland and Ireland. If someone says “a glen,” they are usually talking about that landscape, not a valley in Taiwan or the Alps. In Scottish and Irish place names you will see it at the front: Glen Coe, Glen Lyon. Though actually, travel writers do stretch it a little, but the home of the word is Gaelic-speaking country. It feels like a geography or poetry word. In ordinary English, “valley” is the everyday choice; glen tells you where you are.
