To gladden someone is to make them feel pleased and happy. It is a true, old-fashioned-feeling verb: glad plus the little ending -en, which means “make”. You still hear it in careful or warm writing — “the news gladdened her”, “it gladdens the heart” — more than in the school corridor. In everyday talk people are more likely to say make happy, cheer up, or please. Nothing is wrong with gladden; it just sits a little higher and older than the words your friends text.
