1. 1

Gingivitis is a mouth problem: the gums (the pink flesh around your teeth) become red, swollen, and sore, and they may bleed when you brush. It is usually caused by plaque left on the teeth. Dentists treat it as an early warning; if you clean better, it can get better. If it is left, it can turn into a deeper gum disease that harms the bone around the teeth — though gingivitis itself has not gone that far yet. You will hear it in clinics and health posters, not in casual chat; at home people just say “my gums are sore” or “gum disease.”
