Gibraltar is a small British town and port on a huge rock at the southern tip of Spain, looking across a narrow sea toward Africa. That rock is the Rock of Gibraltar; the water is the Strait of Gibraltar. Britain has held the place since 1713, but Spain says it should be Spanish, and that argument has lasted for centuries. Many tourists go there to see the Rock, the view of two continents, and the famous animals on the — people still call them the apes of Gibraltar, though actually they are a kind of monkey. In English, something like the Rock of Gibraltar means it will not move or give way. On a map it looks as if it belongs to Spain; in law it is a British overseas territory.
組成From Spanish Gibraltar, from Arabic jabal ṭāriq, “Mount Tariq,” named after Tariq ibn Ziyad, who led the Umayyad army into Spain in 711. It replaced the older Latin name Mons Calpe for the land, and Columnae Herculis (from Greek “Pillars of Hercules”) for the strait.
