A geocache is a hidden container that people try to find as a game. Someone tucks it under a bench, in a wood, or on a , then shares the GPS point. open it, sign a little logbook, and may swap a tiny toy or badge for one they brought. The word is also a verb: to geocache is to hide one of these boxes, or to go looking for them. It is hobby language — outdoor clubs, families on weekends — not formal English. Do not picture buried gold; most caches are plastic boxes. The name was suggested in 2000 on a mailing list, to replace the earlier name gpsstash.
