Generalship is the skill of being a general, or the time when someone holds that job. A general is a very high army leader. So generalship can mean the post itself (‘during his generalship’) or the way the person leads — planning, moving people, keeping a cool head. Writers also stretch it to sport, business, or : the ‘generalship’ of a coach or a campaign. That stretch is a little old-fashioned and ; everyday English is more likely to say leadership or strategy. Though actually, the word does not mean ‘being general’ in the sense of ‘not specific’. It is tied to the army rank general, plus -ship, the same ending as in friendship or leadership, which names a role or a skill.
