Gazumping is the name of the act: a house seller accepts a higher offer after already agreeing, in a loose way, to sell to you. Newspapers in Britain talk about gazumping when the market is hot and buyers keep trying to jump the queue with more money. It is not a separate idea from gazump; it is the same story told as a thing that happens, not as a verb. People treat it as unfair even when it is legal, because the first buyer has often already paid for surveys and legal work. You will not hear this much in American English. When prices fall, the mirror problem is more likely to be , not gazumping.
