1. 1

Gaydar is an informal, word for a person's feeling that they can tell whether a man they meet or see is gay — sexually attracted to people of the same sex — without being told, and without already knowing facts about him. It is built to sound like a machine that picks up a signal. People say my gaydar is going off when they have that hunch. It is slang, used in casual talk and comedy, not in serious writing. Though actually, the tidy joke — that you can just know — is messier than it sounds. Clothes, voice, and manner are not a test, and plenty of people are read . Some speakers also stretch it to anyone, not only men, even though the older joke was about men. Use it lightly, and never as a way to out someone or to tease.
