A gavel is a small wooden hammer. The person in charge of a meeting, a court, or an auction hits it on the table to call for quiet, to start, or to mark a decision. You hear “the gavel came down” when a sale is finished or a ruling is made. In pictures of American courts and auctions, the gavel is almost part of the uniform. Though actually, that picture is stronger than real life in some places: British judges, for example, do not generally use a gavel; students who know courts from US films are often surprised. The word can also be a verb: to gavel a meeting to order is to bang that little hammer and make people listen. It is a formal-room object, not a tool you keep at home.
