A gatehouse is a small building beside a gate — at a park, a university, or the drive up to a big house. Someone may sit there to see who comes in, or the rooms may be built into the gateway itself, with an arch you walk or drive through and space above it. Older country houses and castles often have a gatehouse that looks quite grand; in a city park it may be only a tiny lodge for the keeper. It is not the main house. It is the building that belongs to the gate, at the edge of the land, before you reach the place people really live.
