Gastritis is an illness of the stomach: the soft inside wall becomes swollen and sore, and you often feel a burning pain, especially when the stomach is empty or after certain foods. You may also feel sick, feel full too soon, or not want to eat. Doctors use this word; it is not a casual kitchen word. It can last a few days (after a bug, after too much drink, or after a harsh ) or it can last a long time. It is not the same as a stomach ulcer, though the pain can feel similar, and it is not the same as gastroenteritis, which is the sudden “stomach flu” that also hits the gut and often brings . You cannot see gastritis from the outside; a doctor may look with a small camera if they need to be sure. It has nothing to do with the English word gas, even though it starts with the same letters.
組成gastr- + -itis. gastr- is from Ancient Greek gastḗr, “stomach”. -itis is the international medical ending that means “inflammation” — the inside has become swollen and angry. So gastritis is “inflammation of the stomach”.
