If a drink is gassy, it has a lot of bubbles of gas in it — often too many. The gas is the fizz in cola or sparkling water. A gassy drink can make you burp; some people like that sharp feel, some people do not. This is an everyday, slightly informal word. British speakers use it a lot for fizzy drinks; Americans more often say fizzy or carbonated, and they may save gassy for how your stomach feels. Though actually, English uses gassy in more than one place: a gassy stomach means you have too much gas inside you and feel tight and full of air; and people sometimes call talk gassy when it is full of empty words, like hot air. The drink meaning is the one this entry is for.
組成gas + -y. -y means “full of” or “having a lot of”. So gassy is “full of gas”. Gas came into English from Dutch, from Greek kháos. That makes gassy a distant old partner of chaotic — they grew from the same Greek word, but they do not feel like family when you use them.
