When something is gaseous, it is a gas, or it is like a gas: it has no fixed shape, and it can spread out to fill a space. Science class uses this word for one of the three common forms of stuff — solid, liquid, and gaseous. Steam is water in a gaseous form; the air around you is a mix of gaseous things you cannot see. It is a careful school-and-lab word, not a kitchen word. People do not say “the air is gaseous” at dinner; they say it in lessons, in reports, or when they want to be exact. Though actually, a few writers stretch it to ideas that are not solid yet, but that use is rare and a little show-off. Do not mix it with , which is the everyday word for drinks (or ) with too much gas in them.
組成gas + -eous. Gas is the English word for the air-like form of stuff; it came in from Dutch, and that Dutch word was built from Ancient Greek kháos (empty space) and khaûnos. -eous is an ending that means “having the nature of” or “like”. So gaseous is “like gas / of the nature of gas”.
