    Garfield is the fat orange cat in a daily comic strip, drawn by Jim Davis. He loves lasagna, hates Mondays, and would rather sleep than chase mice. The strip has run in hundreds of US newspapers and some British ones, and there are many Garfield books and toys — especially the toy cat people used to stick on car windows with suction cups. Though actually, Garfield is also an ordinary English surname (and the name of a US president), but in shops, stickers, and kids’ talk it almost always means this cat. Jim Davis named the character after his grandfather. The cat is lazy on purpose; that is the joke.

組成As a name, Garfield (also once Garfeld) is from Old English gār, “spear,” plus feld, “field.” The cartoon cat was named after the artist’s grandfather, who bore that surname.
