If someone is garbed in a certain kind of clothing, they are dressed that way — often in clothes that mark a role, a time, or a look. You almost only meet it as garbed in … : garbed in black, garbed in a uniform, garbed as a monk. It is the dressed-in form of garb, and it has the same formal, written feel. People do not say this on the bus about jeans. News, novels, and museum labels like it because it paints a whole picture in one word. Though actually, it is not a separate fashion term; it is just “dressed,” said in an old-fashioned voice.
