Garb is a word for clothes, but not the everyday kind of word. It means a whole style of dress — often the clothes that show someone’s job, rank, or group, or clothes that look strange or old-fashioned to us. So you hear garb, military garb, the garb of a judge, or traditional garb at a festival. News and books like it; friends almost never say “nice garb” about a T-shirt. Though actually, it can also sound a little teasing when the clothes are odd: “in the garb of a superhero.” There is a verb too, to garb someone (to dress them that way), but you will meet the noun far more. It feels formal and a bit literary. In daily talk, people say clothes, outfit, or uniform instead.
組成From Middle French garbe, “a graceful outline or shape” (Modern French galbe), from Italian garbo, “grace, elegance.” Further back it is Germanic — the same old line as English gear — and at the bottom it meant “to prepare” (Frankish *garwijan, from Proto-Germanic *garwijaną).
