A gangplank is a strong board that you walk on to get from a boat to the shore, or from one boat to another. One end rests on the ship and the other on land (or on the other boat), so people can cross the gap. You will hear it around ships and harbours; it is an ordinary, useful thing, not a piece of drama. Older English used gang to mean a way or a path, so a gangplank is simply a path made of a board. Gangway is a cousin: a way on or off a ship, though a gangway is not always a loose board. Though actually, pirate stories say “walk the plank” — that is a different, cruel trick with a board, not this everyday crossing.
