Gamesmanship is the skill of winning by using the rules — and the little spaces around the rules — to help yourself. It is not quite cheating, which breaks the rules. It is more like slowing down, asking for time, talking in a way that puts the other person off, or following the letter of the rule when the spirit of the game wanted something kinder. People use it about sport, but also about work, talks, and politics. It often sounds a bit dry or judging: you may admire the cleverness and still not like the person. Though actually, older writing treated it almost as a joke art; today it can sound sharper, closer to “playing dirty without getting caught.” The opposite spirit is sportsmanship: being fair and generous.
