核心畫面

A gamer is a person seen through one activity: playing. Someone hands them a set of rules and a way to win, and they lean in. The word has stayed on that one picture for centuries while the board under it kept changing — dice, cards, a pitch, a screen, and finally the rules of ordinary life treated as if they were a game to be won.

gamer 可以想成「用一件事來認識的人」:他在玩。有人擺出一套規則和一個輸贏,他就投入進去。幾百年來這個畫面沒變過更多收起gamer 可以想成「用一件事來認識的人」:他在玩。有人擺出一套規則和一個輸贏,他就投入進去。幾百年來這個畫面沒變過,變的是底下那張桌子——骰子、紙牌、球場、螢幕,最後連日常生活裡的規章制度,都被某些人當成一場可以贏的遊戲來玩。

From the word’s history

From Middle English gamer, attested as a common noun before 1450; game (noun) + -er, the suffix that names the person who does something. The word has always meant simply 'one who plays games'.

這個字是 game(遊戲)加上 -er(做這件事的人)組成的,中古英文裡就有 gamer,最晚在一四五〇年以前已被當成普通名詞使用,當時指的是玩各種遊戲、賭局的人。也就是說,「玩遊戲的人」這個字面意思,從一開始就是它的全部;後來的各種用法,都是底下那張桌子換了而已。
