Galveston is a city in southeast Texas, in the United States. It sits on Galveston Island in the Gulf of Mexico, so the sea is part of its whole story. For a long time it was Texas’s main cotton port — ships came in to carry cotton out to the world — and it is still an important fishing centre. People also know it for its beach and its old downtown, and, though this is sad, for a huge hurricane in 1900 that nearly wiped the city away. Galveston is a place name, not a common noun: we write it with a capital G, and it always means this island city.

組成Galvez + -ton. From Galvez’ Town, from Spanish Gálvez. Named after Bernardo de Gálvez y Madrid, Count of Gálvez, a Spanish viceroy of New Spain who supported American independence. In 1783 the Spanish navigator José Antonio de Evia renamed the island and bay Gálvez for him. The port town later took the island’s name, and the bay and island were then renamed after the town. The English form is that Spanish honour-name plus -ton, ‘town’.
