The Charleston is a quick, lively dance that was wildly popular in the 1920s, the Jazz Age. Dancers kick their legs, twist their feet, and swing their arms; it looks happy and a little wild. It took its name from Charleston, a city in South Carolina in the United States, which itself was named for a man called Charles. Though actually, Charleston is also a place-name for more than one city, but this entry is the dance. Older speakers may still say “do the Charleston”; younger people mostly know it from films and photos of the 1920s.
