    When metal is galvanized, it has been given a thin coat of zinc so that rain and air do not make it rust so quickly. You see galvanized steel on roofs, buckets, nails, and fences — a slightly dull, spotty grey look. Factories often do this by dipping the metal in hot zinc. The word looks like the past of , and it is; but when people say galvanized steel they almost always mean this zinc coat, not that the metal was “shocked into action”. British English may write for the same describing word.
