    When something is Gallic, it belongs to France or feels typical of French people: a Gallic shrug, Gallic wit, a Gallic love of sitting long over lunch. It is a writer’s word, a little old-fashioned and a little knowing. In the street you would just say French. Though actually the word is older than the name France. The Romans called that land Gaul, Latin Gallia, and Gallicus meant “of Gaul.” Later English kept Gallic for modern France, even after the Franks had given the country a new name. You meet it in newspapers, history, and slightly essays, not at the market. It has nothing to do with , which is Irish and Scottish — they only look cousins on the page.

組成From Latin Gallicus, “of Gaul”: Gallia (Gaul) + -icus (the same kind of ending as English -ic). Later used, a little archaically, for modern France.
