- 1
Galilean means from Galilee, or it names a person who comes from there. Galilee is a region in the north of what is now Israel; is the town most people know. In the New Testament, Jesus grows up and teaches as a Galilean, and his first followers are often called Galileans too. So this word is a place-adjective and a people-name, not the name of the land itself — that name is Galilee. English also uses Galilean in a later, scientific way: "to do with Galileo." The four big moons of Jupiter are the Galilean moons, because he was the one who saw them. The two uses look the same on the page; the Bible one is about the region, the science one is about the man.
