A gadget is a small tool or machine that does a job in a clever, handy way. Think of a kitchen timer that talks, a tiny light you clip on a book, or some small add-on for a phone — not a car, not a fridge, not a factory. People often say it with a smile: the thing is useful, maybe a bit extra. Though actually, shops now call almost any small electronic thing a gadget, even when it is not especially clever. It is everyday, informal English. In a careful report, “small device” or “tool” may sound safer.
