Futurology is the activity of trying to say, as correctly as you can, what will happen in the future. It is the name of the field, not the person. People who do it look at new machines, population, climate, and money, then write about how life may change. The word sounds like a hard science because of -ology, and in books it is treated as a kind of study — though actually many professors still argue whether it is a real science or a grand name for careful guessing. You will see it in articles more than hear it in daily talk. It is a young word: it showed up in 1934 as a play title (spelled Futureology), and later followed German Futurologie.

組成From future + -ology. Attested once in 1934 as the title of a play, Futureology; in later use, after German Futurologie, suggested in a 1942 letter to the American scholar John H. Herz by the German political scientist Ossip K. Flechtheim, who used futurology in a 1943 Phylon article.
