A futurologist is a person whose work is to try to say what will happen in the years ahead — in machines, work, cities, money, and how people live. They do not look in a glass ball. They read science, watch what people are already doing, and then make careful guesses. Companies and governments pay for those reports. The word feels specialist and a little formal; you meet it in newspapers more than at the dinner table. Though actually, people also use it with a small smile, as if to say this person claims they can see tomorrow. A serious futurologist will tell you they can be wrong. They are not a fortune-teller, and they are not simply a lab scientist: the job sits between study and guess.

組成futurology + -ist. The ending -ist turns a field into a person who does that work. Futurology is the study; a futurologist is the person.
