Futurism is a style of art, music, and writing from the early twentieth century, especially in Italy, that praised modern life: speed, factories, cars, , and machines. Painters tried to show movement and energy, not a quiet still scene. The name is often written Futurism with a capital F when it means this movement, not just ‘liking the future’. Though actually it was not a soft, hopeful style only: some Futurists talked as if war and violence were too, which many people now find ugly. In ordinary English, futurism can also mean a general interest in what is coming, but this entry is the art-and-literature movement. It is a specialist word; most daily talk never needs it.
