Furtherance is the act of helping something move forward or get done. It is a formal, often legal, noun. You will see it most in the set phrase in furtherance of: in order to help that plan, that job, or (in court) that crime along. “In furtherance of the investigation” means to help the investigation proceed. Everyday English prefers helping, supporting, or so that we can. Though actually the tidy gloss “progress” can sound too cheerful: furtherance does not praise the thing being helped. You can speak of the furtherance of science, or of the furtherance of a fraud. The word only names the pushing-along.
組成further (to help on / to a greater degree) + -ance (the act or state). The ending came north through Latin -antia and Old French -ance into English.
