Friendless means you have no friends, and often that you have nobody to turn to for help. It is a sad word, a little old-fashioned or literary: you will meet it in stories more than at the dinner table. In everyday talk people are more likely to say “He hasn’t got any friends” or “She feels alone.” It can sound dramatic. It does not mean only “shy” — a shy person may still have friends. It is also stronger than lonely. You can feel lonely in a busy room; friendless means the friends are really not there, and help may not be there either.
