A friary is a house where friars live and pray together — their community home. It is the friar’s answer to a monastery, which is the usual word for where monks live. In towns you may still see an old building called a friary, sometimes now a church, school, or ruin. The word is mainly historical or church-talk; most people would just say the monastery or the church, even when that is a little loose. Though actually, mixing friary and monastery is very common, and even careful speakers slip. If you want the tidy pair: monks / monastery, friars / friary.
