The long flat strip of wood along the neck of a guitar, where your fingers press the strings down. Across it lie the frets — thin metal bars set into the wood. Pressing a string against the wood just behind a fret shortens the part that can shake, and a shorter string gives a higher note, which is how one string produces many notes. Guitarists use the word constantly, both for the piece of wood itself and for the whole map of positions on it: 'learn the fretboard' means learn where every note lives. Fingerboard means the same piece, and is the usual word for a violin or cello, which have no frets at all; for guitars either word works, though fretboard is more common among players. Not every stringed instrument has frets — that is exactly what makes the violin so hard to play in tune.
