A student in their first year at a university or college. This is British English — very much so. In Britain the first week of term is Freshers' Week, full of parties and clubs signing up new members, and the word turns up constantly in student life there. Americans say freshman instead and would find fresher odd. One useful thing about fresher: it says nothing about whether the student is a man or a woman, which is why some people now prefer it. Be careful, because this same spelling is also just the comparative of fresh — 'this bread is fresher than that one'. Those are two completely different words that happen to look alike, and only the sentence tells you which one you are meeting. Here we mean the student.
組成A shortened form of freshman with -er stuck on the end. This is the playful Oxford -er, a British university habit of chopping a word short and adding -er — the same habit that gave rugger for rugby and soccer for association football.
