A freethinker is someone who makes up their own mind about big questions — God, right and wrong, how the world works — instead of just taking what a church, a school, or a leader tells them. English uses the word with a warm, feeling: it praises the person for thinking independently. It is a little formal and a little old-fashioned; you meet it more in books and talks about ideas than in everyday chat. In older use it often pointed at people who questioned religion. Though actually, it does not mean the person has no beliefs, and it does not only mean “atheist.” It means the beliefs are their own, not borrowed without a look.
