If something is freehand, it is drawn by hand without special tools to keep the line true — no ruler, no compass, no stencil, no computer pulling the curve straight. You can call a picture a freehand drawing, or you can say someone drew it freehand, as a way of drawing. Artists use it when they want a line that feels alive, or when they are only sketching and do not care about . Designers and architects may still start freehand even if the final plan is done with tools. It is a calm, practical word; nobody is showing off when they say it. It does not mean “with a free hand” as in spare time, and it does not mean the drawing is careless — though actually, a freehand line will wobble a little, and that wobble is often the point.
