A freegan is someone who tries not to buy much, especially food. They eat or use things shops have already thrown away — often still fine to eat, but past the date, a bit bruised, or not pretty enough to sell — because they do not want good things to go in the bin. Many also want to live in a simple way, and they do not want their money to feed a system that makes too much and then dumps it. The word is fairly new and a bit informal. People who do this may say it with pride; other people sometimes say it with a raised eyebrow, as if it were only rummaging in bins. Though actually, it is not the same as being poor and having no choice: for most who use the word, it is a choice about waste. And though the word hides “vegan” inside it, a freegan is not simply a vegan who likes free food. Some will even eat leftover meat if it was going to be thrown away; the point is not a diet rule, it is not buying and not wasting.
