    A vegan is someone who eats no animal products at all — no meat, no fish, and also no eggs, no milk, no cheese, no butter, and usually no honey. The line to draw carefully is the one between vegan and vegetarian: a vegetarian gives up meat and fish but may still eat eggs and dairy, while a vegan gives up everything that comes from an animal. Vegan is the stricter of the two. For many people it goes further than food — a strict vegan will also avoid leather shoes, wool, and products tested on animals — because the reason behind it is usually a belief about how animals should be treated, though some people do it for health or for the environment. The word works as both a noun ('she's a vegan') and an adjective ('vegan cheese', 'a vegan restaurant'), and the adjective use is everywhere now on packaging and menus. The noun for the practice is veganism. Pronunciation catches out: it is VEE-gun, with a long ee — not 'vay-gan' and not 'veg-an'.
