Freebirth is when a woman chooses to have her baby at home with no doctor, no midwife, and no hospital team waiting. People mix this up with a home birth, though actually a home birth can still have a trained midwife in the room. This word was made from free + birth by an American midwife and herbalist, Jeannine Parvati Baker. Some families choose it because they want the birth to stay private and unmedical. Doctors worry because if bleeding or another emergency starts, help is far away. You will meet it in news and debate, not in everyday small talk. It can also be used as a verb: to freebirth.
