    To freebase is to heat and smoke a very pure form of the illegal drug cocaine. Powder cocaine is usually mixed with another chemical so people can take it through the nose. If you take that extra chemical away, chemists call what is left a free base: the drug is not stuck to the powder-making part any more, so it can be smoked. The smoke hits the body very fast, which is why some people do it, and why it is so dangerous and against the law. You will hear this in news and crime stories, not in polite classroom talk. People also use freebase as a name for the stuff itself, not only the action. Crack is a related street form, though actually the two words are not a perfect match: crack is often made with baking soda, while freebase is the wider chemical idea. The free here does not mean costs nothing.
