Free-range describes a kind of farming where animals such as chickens, hens, or pigs can move around and eat in a more natural way, instead of living packed in a small indoor space. Free-range eggs come from hens that are allowed outside (or at least much more space than a cage). The word is about freedom of movement, not automatically about medicine, feed, or “organic” labels — those are separate claims, though shops sometimes pile them together. People also stretch it: free-range childhood or free-range parenting means children are allowed to roam and try things with less watching, like the animals in the original picture. That stretch is informal and a bit . On packets the is usual: free-range eggs.
