    The franc is a unit of money. France and Belgium used the franc for a long time, then switched to the euro in 2002, so you mostly meet the French or Belgian franc in older prices, history, and stories. Some other countries still use a franc, or used one until recently: Switzerland has the Swiss franc, and several African countries use a CFA franc. In careful talk you name the country (Swiss franc, CFA franc) because “a franc” by itself often makes people think of the old French money. Informal writing sometimes Swiss franc to CHF in business, but in speech people still say franc.
