A frag is a hand grenade whose metal body breaks, when it goes off, into many tiny sharp pieces that fly out and cut. The long name is grenade; frag is the short soldier's word. It is informal. In a careful report you would write the full name. Though actually, people stretch it a lot. In video games, a frag is often simply a kill, and to frag someone is to kill them, even when no grenade is on the screen — that is the meaning young players meet first. There is an older, darker army use too: in Vietnam War talk, to frag someone meant to try to kill your own officer with this kind of grenade. That use is historical and ugly. The grenade itself is the core meaning; the game kill is the everyday stretch.
