Fragmentation is what happens when a whole breaks, or is broken, into many small separate parts that no longer belong together. Though actually, the same word is also a calm technical word. Computer people talk about disk fragmentation (files stored in scattered pieces). Soldiers talk about fragmentation grenades. talk about habitat fragmentation (a forest cut into patches). Those uses are a description, not always a complaint. The verb is fragment; this noun names the process or the result. It sounds formal. Everyday English might just say breaking up or splitting apart.
